How to check if your device is compatible with the Optus network
To connect to the Optus network, you’ll need a compatible 4G/5G device. Check if your mobile phone is compatible with the Optus network using the Device Checker tool.
New rules were introduced on 28 October 2024 by the Australian Federal Government under the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Amendment Determination 2024 (No. 1). These rules were introduced to address concerns over Triple Zero (000) calling due to the closure of 3G networks in Australia.
Under the ECS Determination, amaysim is legally required to:
- Identify mobile phones that are unable to call Triple Zero (000) over 4G VoLTE;
- Notify impacted customers;
- Block these devices from accessing the Optus mobile network; and
- Give assistance to customers to access alternative mobile phones.
Mobile phones that are identified as ‘unsafe’ or incompatible with Triple Zero (000) calling over 4G VoLTE, will not be able to make or receive calls/texts or use mobile data once blocked.
How to check if your device is unlocked
You can check the lock status of your device by contacting your existing provider. Typically, only devices that have been purchased as part of specific mobile phone contracts will require unlocking, however, this depends on your provider.
To unlock a locked device, you'll need to contact your existing provider, and they may have terms and conditions as well as additional fees attached to this process.
In most cases device unlocking can be completed within minutes. However, in some cases where a code needs to be obtained from the manufacturer, it can take up to 10 business days.
