What is 5G and how does it work?
5G is the fifth-generation mobile network. It is a new global standard for mobile networks following in the footsteps of 3G and 4G.
The introduction of 5G is set to deliver faster network speeds, lower latency, greater reliability and improvements to network capacity which will allow for multiple devices to connect simultaneously without suffering on performance.
The rollout of the Optus 5G Network is underway and 5G coverage is now available in selected areas across Australia on the Optus 5G Network.
How does 5G work?
Mobile signals are carried over the electromagnetic radio-frequency spectrum. The higher the frequency spectrum, the shorter the distance and time between waves.
5G networks use a high-frequency range, which in comparison to 3G and 4G can provide faster speeds, better bandwidth and near-instant response times.

What happens when I’m outside a 5G coverage area?
Your device will switch between the 4G and 5G networks as you move between different coverage areas. '5G' will display on the top of your home screen when you're connected to 5G.
5G v 4G: what's the difference?
5G will not replace the 4G network (yet). The two networks will work together, in the same way the 3G and 4G networks previously co-existed.
The introduction of 4G brought with it HD streaming on mobile and higher quality video calls. When the 5G network reaches maturity, it will introduce the following key benefits:
- Faster speeds: Performance on the Optus 5G network will bring faster speeds, meaning downloading movies, games and other large files may take seconds, rather than minutes.
- Greater Reliability: The superior bandwidth of 5G allows for more devices to connect at the same time, without suffering on performance
- Seamless Connectivity: 5G can provide near-instant response times between devices due to lower latency, allowing better online gaming and improved virtual and augmented reality experiences.
Note: 5G is currently only available for data use. When you make a call on your 5G mobile device, you'll revert back to 4G access depending on where you're located.
Does 5G use more data than 4G?
5G doesn’t inherently use more data than 4G. It’s essentially a more advanced version of the current mobile networks we use with technology that allows for faster speeds, lower latency and greater capacity.
With this said, it's generally assumed that as we start to use 5G, we will naturally start to consume more data thanks to the attributes of 5G and how seamless it makes downloading large files, streaming content in Ultra HD and connecting multiple devices at once.
For this reason, if you do plan to use 5G, we recommend making sure you optimise your phone settings so you can make the most of the mobile data included in your plan.
Can I make a voice call over the 5G network?
5G is currently only available for data use. When you make a call on a 5G compatible mobile device, you'll revert to the 4G network.
With this said, one of the core benefits of our 5G mobile plans is that they offer Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE which you gives you a number options to make calls when you're out and about or have a Wi-FI signal.
What is Wi-FI Calling?
WiFi Calling allows you to make and receive Calls, over a WiFi network.
You can use this capability if you have a compatible WiFi Calling device, you're connected to WiFi, you have activated the relevant settings on your device, and you don't have sufficient mobile network coverage to make a call.
What is VoLTE?
VoLTE or Voice over LTE is technology that enables voice calls to take place on the 4G network.
You can experience faster call connection times in comparison to 3G. 4G voice calls are also made in high definition (HD) which providers sharp, clear call quality.
How to make 5G active on your mobile device
Depending on the 5G mobile device you're using, it should be a case of simply going into the network settings of your phone, and making sure 5G has been switched on.
If you're unable to find this, either refer to the manual of your respective phone or do a quick google search on how to enable 5G on the device you're using.
Is 5G safe?
There are two independent government bodies in charge of overseeing the safety and regulation of electromagnetic energy:
- The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is the Australian Government’s communications industry regulator.
- The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) is the Australian Government’s authority on radiation protection and nuclear safety.
In January 2020 Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Professor Brendan Murphy issued the following statement to reassure Australians:
I’d like to reassure the community that 5G technology is safe. There is no evidence telecommunication technologies, such as 5G, cause adverse health impacts. This position is supported by health authorities in Australia – such as the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) – and around the world, such as the World Health Organization (WHO).
How does 5G compare with 4G?
The power levels of the radio signals transmitted by 5G radio equipment will be of similar or lower magnitude as those used in previous networks. 5G devices will be designed and tested to comply with established radio wave exposure limits.
5G base stations will be positioned so that the exposure in homes and public areas is well below the limits.

Can I keep my current mobile number if I use a 5G plan?
You sure can. Transferring your mobile number is quick, easy and all online. All you need are your account details with your current Aussie telco - you don't have to cancel your plan with them and there's absolutely no paperwork or downtime.
How can I switch to a 5G mobile plan?
If you're new to amaysim
If you're coming across to amaysim from another provider, the process to switch is straightforward.
Make sure you have a 5G enabled mobile device which is on our list of eligible devices, check your local 5G coverage and then select buy now next to your chosen amaysim 5G mobile plan. During the signup process, you can choose to bring your existing phone number across or select a new one.
If you're an existing customer
You can switch via the amaysim app. Just make sure you're using the most up-to-date version of the app.
A 5G capable mobile device is required and you'll need to be located in a 5G coverage area to enjoy 5G performance.

5G Coverage will depend on factors such as your device, software, location, your distance from a network tower and network traffic. To access 5G signal you’ll need to be using a 5G enabled device and be in a 5G coverage area.
When you’re on the go you may find your device switching between 5G and 4G, this is because your device will automatically select the strongest signal in your area

There are a number of different factors that can impact 5G mobile data speed, including;
- The device you're using - Is your phone 5G compatible?
- Location - Is 5G available in your area? How far are you from the nearest 5G tower?
- Excessive data sessions - Are you attempting to use too many apps at the same time?
- Outages - Are there planned or unplanned outages nearby?
