Updating your phone’s software is an important practice that you should be doing regularly. Keeping your phone updated to the latest software version available gives it access to the latest features(1), bug fixes, and important security updates to keep your data safe.
But it’s not always clear what a software update actually does. We’re here to help answer your questions and provide instructions and tips on how to update.
Why should I update my phone’s software?
Updating your phone’s software regularly is essential for keeping it safe and reliable.
There may also be apps, and newer app updates, that only work with newer software versions. Your phone may also receive performance improvements after installing an update, with bug fixes and optimisations being applied.
Improved network compatibility also helps you connect to Emergency Services when it matters most.
How do I update my phone’s software?
Updating your software is easy, but the advice we give you on updates will vary depending on if you own an Apple or Android phone. We’ve covered off both below.
With some phones, you can switch on automatic updates in the settings. This means you don’t have to worry about missing an update.
We recommend having your phone either on charge or charged to at least 75% battery before downloading and installing an update, so it doesn’t shut down during the upgrade. We also recommend connecting to Wi-Fi to install the update, so it doesn’t eat into your phone plan data.
Once you’ve followed the steps below, the phone will restart and apply the update. You’ll know if the update has successfully installed by checking the latest software version in your settings.
How do I update an Apple iPhone?
Apple provides easy to understand advice on how to update an iPhone:
Go to the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap General, then tap Software Update.
The currently installed version of iOS is shown, and whether an update is available.
If an update is available, tap Download and Install, then follow the onscreen instructions.
How do I update an Android phone?
You can find great advice on how to update your Android phone in the Android Help Center. Versions of Android vary across different types of phones, so keep in mind that this is general advice that spans the wide range of Android phones on the market – your phone may have additional update settings or a more direct way of accessing the software update:
Open your phone's Settings app.
Tap System Software updates (you can find the update status here).

How will I know when I need to update my software?
Most major phone manufacturers will send a notification when a new software update is available. You can also check if a new software update is available in your settings.
If you need help updating your phone’s software, we recommend you reach out to your mobile provider (i.e. amaysim) or check with your phone manufacturer (i.e. Apple, Samsung, Google, etc).
How often should I update my phone’s software?

What should I do if I don’t have enough storage to update?
Your phone needs a little extra space to download and install the update. The good news is it's usually a quick fix. Try freeing up some space by deleting apps you no longer use, removing old photos or videos, or clearing out downloaded files. You can also back up your photos, videos and documents to the cloud - iCloud if you're on an iPhone, or Google One if you're on an Android. Once you've cleared some space, head back to your phone's software update settings and try again.
